This is an interesting website that I found while using a Mozilla Firefox plugin known as Stumble Upon. This website is called Telescopic text. Basically it begins with a very small simple sentence stating.

“I made tea.”

Each word is highlighted and you can click on them. With each click the simple sentence gets much more detailed and finally ends up being quite an extensive story about how this man made his tea in the morning. Its rather cool and I advise you to check it out.

Humanity, I Love you

Humanity, I love you, because you would rather black the boots of success than inquire whose soul dangles from his watch-chain, which would be embarrassing for both parties. Also, because you unflinchingly applaud all songs containing the words: country, home, and mother when sun at the Old Howard. Humanity, I love you, because when you’re hard up, you pawn your intelligence to buy a drink and when you’re flush, pride keeps you from the pawn shops. You also continually commit nuisances, especially in your own house. Humanity, I love you, because you are perpetually putting the secret of life in your pants. Forgetting its there, sitting upon it. I love you because you are forever making poems in the lap of death. Humanity, I hate you.

Sorry this was late. Really Late. The breaks went in my car and I’ve been dealing with that all day.

James "Mapes" Hadley

James "Mapes" Hadley

James Hadley (born on November 23, 1989 in New London, Connecticut) has always been interested in a wide array of art related things: writing, music, photography, and theater, just to name a few. Among these, one specific interest seems to take precedence over the rest; this being James’ passion for music. James, very early on, had been introduced to many artists, some of which include Lynyrd Skynyrd, Metallica, and Stevie Ray Vaughan; this allowed him to understand and appreciate various types of music at an extremely early age. Coming from a very artistically deprived background, James had turned to this music to help guide his drive for creativity; he was unaware of the affect this would have on him in the later years of his life.

James, soon after his musical discovery, began writing short stories, singing in the shower and drawing quite regularly, doing anything to relieve the creative tension that had been placed upon him. As the years progressed and James’ maturity furthered, so did the forms of artistic expression he chose to use. It wasn’t until the age of 15 when James picked up his first guitar; much to his surprise he was quite adept with the stringed instrument and that same day formed a band with some of his closest friends. This band would soon be known as Sons of Leo. Immediately they began writing songs and playing shows, all the while James had been practicing and honing his skills, both on the guitar and on the sketch pad. Unfortunately, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end; Sons of Leo was no exception. In the summer of 2007 the band parted ways due to both creative and lifestyle differences. James would not set foot on a stage again until February of 2008; within this time period James would begin taking guitar lessons and begin attending the University of Maine in Orono and primarily focus on his graphic design and photography work.

James with some slight advertising through Deviantart.com ended up with some professional commission work. A fraction of the jobs are as follows: logo designs for BillPierceGuitar.com, and Six of Pentacles Productions, artwork for independent bands such as Giantgiant, Rebirth to Ends, Cephaloprog and many others. On top of all this he continually did personal artwork all of which can be viewed here skyillusion.deviantart.com.

On a more recent note, James is now playing guitar in a new band known as Rebirth to Ends who have recorded and released their debut album entilted “Awakening”. James is still attending the University of Maine with an Undeclared Major. However, he is now highly considering a major within the writing field. Despite what happens in the future, James still hopes to someday hold a job working professionally with his music or his artwork.

The Unfortunate effects of being Undecided.

Why is writing important to my major? In all honesty, I can’t say that there is an importance as of right now. Mostly because I technically don’t have a major. However, I do know that regardless of the major that I wind up in, it could never hurt to be a technically great and proficient writer. There is nothing like being able to write something then look back at it months later and be completely blown away and astonished by the fact that YOU wrote it. You know?

Hopefully writing will be a great supplement with whatever I decide to do. Like I said though: It’s not something that could ever hurt to have. Since to me, writing is an important real world skill. Say you have an important business proposal you have to write. If this “proposal” ends up being littered with spelling errors and poor grammar choices, you’re probably not going to be taken seriously. It’s a lot like being able to speak a countries native language, people can manage being in the country without knowing the native tongue. But for obvious reasons, it can and will severely impact the way that people look at and treat you.

Anyway. The purpose of this blog entry was to stress the importance of writing in my chosen major; I’m not sure what I have done here, but I like what I have said. In the end, however, I know it will be a great supplement to whatever path I choose to take in life. I don’t know how its helping me in my major since it really can’t if I don’t have one, kind of self-perpetuating isn’t it? I suppose those are the unfortunate effects of being undecided.

Howdy Everyone!

So I suppose the question that I am to be answering with this blog entry is why am I taking CMJ 236…. I have been stressing to find a major ever since I began my career and life here at UMaine. I have no idea what to do and no idea what I am going to do. But soon, hopefully soon, I will know what I want to do with my life.

So my reasons for taking this class are this: I, in the last few months, have been actually leaning greatly towards a Journalism major or even an English/Writing major. However, at this time, I still do not have a defined major and I guess until then I am exploring my options. Hopefully this Journalism thing will work out like I think it will.

Only time will tell!
